With the autonomy claimed by art in modernity, the irreversible separation between art and religion (speaking more precisely of the Western world) took place. For centuries, art was considered a tool for catechizing and morally educating the people, which is why sacred places have always been accompanied by captivating and explicit images of doctrines, punishments, saints, events and the whole group of elements referring to the relationship between divinities and humanity. After the great social and cultural revolution of modernity, different artistic practices have been adding stones to the great wall that separates both worlds. The openly worldly character attributed to art has accentuated the reserved position of the church in the face of contemporary artistic manifestations.
