Castles's work stems from the abstract geometric tradition in Colombia. His early sculptures, created between 1976 and 1979, constructed from sheets of rusted iron, communicate expressive qualities inherent in the materials themselves and the veracity of their structures. These works emphasize natural forces such as gravity, which allowed him to abandon pedestals, giving his works an earthly character.
