In Bosque, the artist explores plant agency and vitality, presenting two large interventions and a series of smaller individual pieces. Young draws on her experience as a forest caretaker and visitor to examine the gestures that embody the vitality of these ecosystems: sunlight filtering through the foliage, the humidity of the air, or the subtle combination of insect sounds. This plant vitality or agency can be summarized through the notion of "Viriditas," coined by the medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen, which refers to the "greenness" or "life force" that permeates the physical world, especially nature. "Viriditas" reflects the collective force that enables growth, and is also a deeply spiritual term, referring to a manifestation of sacred energy, a connection between the earthly and the divine.
