John Castles (Barranquilla, 1946) is one of the most important figures in the development of sculptural modernism in Colombia. His work is born from the abstract geometric tradition in Colombia and is characterized by the use of materials such as steel and iron. In his work, matter is unfolded, the tensions between forms and emptiness, between weight and lightness, between volume and space reach an architectural balance. Castles has held more than thirty national and international solo exhibitions, has participated in the Sao Paulo Biennial (1981) and the Havana Biennial (1986) and his work is part of collections such as those of the Pérez Art Museum – PAMM (Miami), the Museum of Art of the Americas – OAS (Washington DC), the Museum of Modern Art – MAM (Rio de Janeiro) and the Bank of the Republic of Colombia (Bogotá). He lives and works in Bogotá.
