The pictorial surface is not simply a repository of images and narratives, it is a material construction, where color and shape acquire volume, a physical presence in the world. In the work of Miguel Ángel Barba (Ciudad Real, 1976) this material construction occurs through subtle gestures, imperceptible in isolation, but which take on meaning in their incessant repetition. Whether through short lines that overlap, vertical lines that follow one another, hundreds of graphite dots or even cuts in the canvas, these minimal forms form complex patterns that display powerful pictorial spaces.
