Ana Mercedes Hoyos at the Palais de Tokyo

The work of Ana Mercedes Hoyos was chosen to participate in the exhibition Sarah Maldoror: Tricontinental Cinema at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The exhibition opened in November this year and will be open until February 20, 2022.

Sarah Maldoror: Tricontinental Cinema This is the first exhibition dedicated to the work of Sarah Maldoror (1929-2020). It offers the opportunity to discover her cinematographic work and its relationship with theatre, poetry and politics. Her multifaceted production, which alternates documentary and fiction, is part of a revolutionary and decolonial cinema, firmly anti-racist and without complexes.

The exhibition also explores the difficulties the filmmaker faced in gaining recognition for her work, as well as in financing and circulating it. What emerges is a non-linear trajectory crossed by “lost” projects that were never made or have been lost. The exhibition brings together Sarah Maldoror’s work and her life journey as a filmmaker, woman and mother, compelled by an urgent political imperative to take up the camera as much as by an economic imperative to continue working.

In 2008 Maldoror published a documentary about the presence of Afro-Colombian communities in the work of Ana Mercedes Hoyos.
